Regarding Clay Tales

Chinese artisan shaping a handmade clay figurine in the studio, showcasing traditional folk art craftsmanship and the creative process of Clay Tales

Figurative clay sculptures inspired by everyday life in China, created for collectors and contemplative spaces.

Clay Tales is a platform dedicated to presenting and selling contemporary works rooted in Chinese folk art traditions, with a focus on figurative clay sculpture shaped by everyday life and cultural memory.

At this stage, our platform primarily features handcrafted clay figurine works by artist Hu Yunping. Over time, we may also introduce works by other Chinese folk creators whose practice reflects a similar depth of lived experience and craftsmanship.

What We Do

Clay Tales is more than a place to list artworks. Our work is to make the creative context understandable: where a piece comes from, what it tries to express, and how it can be appreciated, cared for, and preserved today. That is why many of our artworks are accompanied by background notes and practical collecting guidance—so the viewer can approach them with an art appreciation mindset rather than seeing them only as decorative objects.

Subjects & Creative Spirit

The creators we collaborate with often draw inspiration from ordinary people and everyday scenes: villages and streets, quiet moments, small gestures, and honest emotions. These works are not made to look “ideal” or “perfect.” They value sincerity—simple, grounded forms with a strong sense of life.

  • Childlike expressions and natural smiles
  • Direct and pure emotional moments
  • Figures playing instruments or working in daily life
  • Still poses—thinking, standing, gazing
  • Traditional roles with cultural symbolism (depending on the piece)

We believe the most moving art is rarely a grand narrative. Often, it is a glance, a facial expression, or a subtle posture—something small that feels deeply real. The value is not “added by decoration,” but carried by the emotion and presence within the form.

Craft Characteristics (General)

The works presented on Clay Tales are primarily shaped by hand rather than mass-produced from molds. Many pieces go through natural drying and high-temperature firing, which helps the structure become more stable and the texture more grounded.

Finishing details can vary from piece to piece. Some works may include partial glazing or surface treatment, while others remain unglazed. Whenever a piece has any special surface treatment, we will clearly note it on the product page.

Finger marks, subtle textures, and firing traces are often part of the handmade language. They are not “artificial aging,” and they are not automatically flaws—rather, they are honest material expressions that reflect the hand and the process.

Collecting & Shipping: Making Commerce More Reliable

Clay Tales is an independent store with promotion and sales as a core purpose. For that reason, we place special attention on the experience after purchase—information clarity, collecting guidance, and safe cross-border delivery.

  • Clear information: material, size, craft notes, and care reminders are specified on each product page.
  • Care guidance: simple tips for placement, dusting, and avoiding moisture or strong temperature swings.
  • Protective packaging: stronger protection for fragile pieces to reduce shipping risks.
  • After-sales communication: if you have questions after receiving the artwork, you can contact us through the site.

About Public Claims: A More Careful Way to Describe

We respect the possibility that artworks may be exhibited, exchanged, or collected in different contexts. However, in public website text, we prioritize information that can be reasonably verified and clearly explained, and we avoid absolute statements that would require formal third-party documentation to support.

If you are interested in specific background details about a particular piece or the artist’s experiences, we prefer to provide accurate clarification through direct communication on request.
